Adult children who are estranged from their parents struggle with
the pain
of being emotionally cut off from their families.
Often, my clients have moved far away from their families-of-origin
to escape
the inner turmoil that contact with their parents creates.
But distance doesn’t bring peace, and the pain doesn’t disappear.
The longing to be emotionally close to our parents can affect our
feelings
of self-worth.
It can undermine our romantic relationships, because we fear that
underneath
it all, we are unlovable.
In cases like these, therapy can help heal wounds and re-open
the lines of
communication
It can also mean coming to terms with parental relationships
that may never
change.
